Pedestrian Accessibility Consultation

Accessibility is a shared outcome across planning, design, review, procurement, construction, and installation. As projects move from standards to the finished environment, important details may be interpreted differently or changed.

I help teams preserve the intent of pedestrian accessibility requirements by connecting the standards to the research behind them and to how people who navigate nonvisually interact with the finished environment.

APS and Intersection Accessibility Second Opinion

When a project team has a focused pedestrian accessibility question, an additional specialist perspective can help clarify what the design or installation needs to accomplish.

APS placement, curb ramps, detectable warnings, pedestrian routing, unusual geometry, bicycle and transit interfaces, and signal operation must work together as a coherent source of information. I help teams understand how people who navigate nonvisually interact with the finished environment, why particular accessibility details matter, and how standards and research support those details.

Good questions for a second opinion

  • Will the APS location and tactile arrow clearly identify the crossing it controls?
  • Do the curb ramp, crosswalk, detectable warning, and pedestrian signal work together?
  • Could unusual geometry, a bicycle facility, or a transit interface create ambiguity?

Targeted virtual consultations start at $350. Detailed intersection reviews start at $500 and include a written Accessibility Perspective Memorandum. On-site consultation is available at $1,000 per day plus approved travel expenses.

Bring a standards-grounded blind-pedestrian perspective to your next staff training, lunch and learn, webinar, or professional meeting.

Seeing the Intersection Differently explains how people navigating nonvisually identify and use intersection information, then connects that process to APS placement and operation, curb ramps, detectable warning surfaces (DWS), crosswalk geometry, signal timing, bicycle and transit interfaces, and field installation. The session helps transportation professionals understand what particular accessibility requirements say, why they are written that way, and how the research supports them.

College and University Programs

Guest lectures and campus programs connect standards, research, orientation and mobility, and firsthand nonvisual navigation with the decisions students and professionals will make in their own fields.

Programs are tailored for engineering and planning courses, orientation and mobility programs, disability studies, campus-wide audiences, and faculty or staff development. The emphasis is practical: how people interact with the environments and systems being designed, why accessibility requirements function as they do, and how better questions early can prevent avoidable problems later.
